IGS Corporation Ltd announced today that it had obtained the licensing and merchandising rights for Angry Birds, one of the world’s hottest and most popular entertainment and media brands. Angry Birds began as an iPhone game in 2009, but it quickly evolved into a global phenomenon.

In the original Angry Birds game, players take control of a bunch of cute but angry birds who face off against hungry pigs who have stolen their eggs. The goal of the game is to shoot the birds from a slingshot and smash the pigs, using the special abilities of each bird to solve physics-based puzzles that grow more challenging as the game progresses.

The unique audiovisual design, intuitive game play, and high quality game content made Angry Birds the must have application for smartphones everywhere. In under a year, Angry Birds transformed into much more than simply a game: a worldwide social and cultural phenomenon.

After initial release, Rovio has published new versions of the game, including Angry Birds Seasons, which celebrated different holiday themes around the world, and Angry Birds Rio, which was created in collaboration with 20th Century Fox and the movie Rio. The different versions of the game have been downloaded more than 500 million times across platforms.

Angry Birds merchandise has also proven to be very popular among fans, and Rovio is in the process of creating more products to meet the consumer demand. Rovio recently introduced its first book, Bad Piggies’ Egg Recipes, and is planning to expand even more in publishing. With the acquisition of the animation studio Kombo, Angry Birds is also poised to take on animation and entertainment. Rovio’s new business ventures in licensing, publishing, and animation have quickly become a vital part of the Angry Birds brand.

Martin Richards (CEO, IGS Corporation) is pleased to announce today that IGS has secured the Pan-European rights for Angry Birds™ video gaming accessories. Martin said: “The acquisition of this license is ideally suited to our distribution base both in the UK and throughout Europe. We will be concentrating on PS3, Xbox 360 and 3D DSi accessories for the initial launch. The accessories are currently in the design and approval stage with manufacturing of the first product in January which we hope to ship before Chinese New Year. The Angry Birds™ Accessories will be launched in conjunction with Rovio’s release of the games on each associated platform. We are delighted to be working with Rovio on this project. The new Angry Birds™ video game accessories are available for pre-order from IGS (GameOn®) now. The range includes Xbox 360 compatible headsets, PS3 compatible Bluetooth’s and 3D DSi compatible accessory sets amongst other products.
